What Makes Six Month Photos So Worth Booking

Six month photos of baby girl lying on a white blanket and reaching toward her toes during a milestone photo session

One minute you have a tiny, sleepy newborn who fits perfectly in your arms, and suddenly you have a baby with opinions, the biggest gummy grin, a favorite way to blow raspberries, and an undeniable little personality of their own.

They are reaching for their toes, grabbing anything within reach, making new sounds, and looking at the world with those wide, curious eyes. And somehow, those tiny newborn rolls are still there before they start disappearing as they become more mobile.

This is exactly why I love six month photos so much.

If you are a parent wondering whether you really need another photo session between newborn photos and your baby’s first birthday, my answer is a very enthusiastic yes. Six months is one of those stages that is incredibly fleeting, and it is often the stage parents don’t realize they will miss until it is already gone.

For many of my families in Minneapolis, this session becomes one of their favorites from the entire first year.

What Is a Six Month Milestone Session?

A six month milestone session is a baby-focused portrait session designed to capture your little one during that sweet stage when their personality is really beginning to shine.

You may also hear these called sitter sessions, because they are often photographed once a baby is sitting independently.

I personally prefer to think of these sessions as sitter sessions rather than tying them to an exact age. Every baby develops differently, and I would much rather photograph your baby when they are ready for the stage than worry about whether they are exactly six months old.

These sessions are very different from newborn photography. Instead of sleepy, curled-up poses, we are capturing all of the things your baby is doing right now: sitting, reaching, grabbing their toes, smiling, laughing, looking around, and interacting with you.

And don’t worry if your baby isn’t sitting completely independently yet. If they are close, we can absolutely work with them. Sometimes I’ll have a parent gently support them just out of frame, and if an arm or hand is visible, I can often remove it during editing.

The goal is never to make your baby perform. We simply meet them where they are.

My studio also has plenty of simple options to keep these sessions beautiful and timeless, including blankets, wood toys, wraps, and other understated pieces. You can keep things incredibly simple and focused on your baby, or add a few meaningful details to make the session feel more personal.

For my families, there are two ways to approach this stage: a Signature Session for a more complete experience or a Simplicity Session if you want a shorter session focused primarily on your baby.

Six Month Photos Capture Personality Like No Other Age

This is probably my favorite thing about photographing babies at this stage.

At six months, babies are so expressive.

The huge grin. The little open-mouth laugh. The serious stare. The excited kicking. The drool. The moment they discover their toes and suddenly become completely fascinated by them.

And then there are the moments you couldn’t have planned if you tried.

I don’t want every image to look perfectly posed. In fact, some of my favorite images are the ones that happen in between the “poses.” A baby reaching toward the camera. A mid-laugh expression. Tiny hands wrapped around their toes. A curious look off toward the window.

Those are often the images parents end up wanting to frame.

My job is to create an environment where those expressions can happen naturally. We keep the studio warm and comfortable, and I use little rattles, songs your baby loves, peek-a-boo, and plenty of interaction to get those genuine smiles and reactions.

And there is something especially wonderful about this age: they usually haven’t developed much stranger danger yet. They are curious, social, and still have those delicious baby rolls that can start disappearing once crawling and walking take over.

Why Is Six Months Photos the Sweet Spot of the First Year?

Think about the major milestones of your baby’s first year: Newborn, Six months, First birthday. Some families even like to do three and nine month milestone sessions!

Each stage looks completely different, which is why I think the middle chapter deserves just as much attention as the bookends.

Newborn photos capture your baby when they are brand new. First birthday photos capture the little person they have become.

But six month photos capture the beautiful in-between.

They are no longer that sleepy newborn, but they aren’t running around the studio yet either. They can interact with you, smile at you, sit up, grab their toes, and show you so much of who they are becoming.

Babies change incredibly quickly during the first year. Sometimes it feels like you blink and they have completely changed.

That is why so many parents who initially think, “We already have newborn photos, so maybe we’ll just wait until their first birthday,” end up wishing they had documented this stage too.

Six month photos complete the story.

When you eventually look through your baby’s first year album, you’ll see not only where they started and where they ended up, but all of the little changes in between.

When Should You Book Your Six Month Photos?

Since I prefer to photograph babies once they are sitting independently, the best timing will depend on your baby’s development. Some babies are sitting beautifully around six months, while others need a little more time.

If you know you want to document this stage, we can talk through where your baby is developmentally and choose a date that makes sense.

If you are a First Year Collective member, you receive calendar booking priority, which makes planning your baby’s milestone sessions even easier.

The beauty of a first-year membership is that you don’t have to remember to reach out every few months and wonder when you should schedule the next session. We plan the entire year together!

Which Six Month Photo Ideas Work Best?

When it comes to six month photo ideas, I always come back to one word: timeless.

I love keeping the focus on your baby rather than creating a complicated set that will quickly feel dated.

For many of my sessions, babies wear simple white bloomer covers, neutral knit onesies, or another timeless outfit that lets their personality take center stage.

Here are a few of my favorite places to shop for six month photos:

I also have the cutest neutral half-birthday hat if you want to incorporate a little milestone detail without making the images feel overly themed.

You can also bring something meaningful from home, such as a family heirloom, favorite lovey, special toy, or another small item that has significance to your family.

And if you are planning your baby’s six month photos after having their newborn session in my studio, I love creating a cohesive visual story between the two. Choosing simple styling, similar tones, and timeless artwork means your newborn and milestone portraits can eventually live beautifully together in an album or framed collection.

A Little Prep Makes Your Six Month Session Shine

You don’t need to do anything elaborate to prepare for your baby’s session.

In fact, keeping things simple is usually best.

Try to schedule the session around your baby’s normal routine whenever possible. A good nap and a full belly can go a long way, but don’t stress if the day doesn’t go perfectly.

Bring a few things from home that may help your baby feel comfortable, such as a favorite lovey, pacifier, or toy. You are also welcome to bring a couple of outfit options if you’d like some variety.

And please don’t worry about having a fussy baby.

Babies cry. They get distracted. They need to eat. They need a break. Sometimes they just decide they are done.

That’s all completely normal.

My sessions are intentionally relaxed and unhurried, so there is room for those moments. We can pause, cuddle, feed, change a diaper, or take a little break whenever your baby needs it.

There is no expectation that your baby needs to smile for an entire session.

Sometimes the sweetest photographs happen right after the tears.

Book Your Baby’s Six Month Photos While This Stage Lasts

Six months is such a special little pocket of the first year.

Your baby is becoming more expressive and interactive, but they still have those soft baby rolls. They are discovering their toes, laughing at peek-a-boo, reaching for everything, and showing you more and more of their personality every day.

It is a stage that disappears incredibly quickly.

I especially love photographing babies at this age because I get to see who they are becoming. After photographing a baby as a newborn, it is so fun seeing them come back into the studio months later and realizing just how much they have changed.

Your baby won’t always be this size. They won’t always reach for their toes with that little belly in the air. They won’t always have those same cheeks, rolls, expressions, or gummy smiles.

And that is what makes these photographs worth having.

If you’re looking for six month photos in Minneapolis, I would love to help you document this beautiful middle chapter of your baby’s first year.

Frequently Asked Questions About Six Month Photos

What should my baby wear for six month photos?

I love simple, timeless outfits in soft neutrals, whites, creams, and natural tones. Think knit textures, bloomers, and simple onesies rather than busy patterns or bold graphics. I also have a curated client wardrobe with beautiful baby options, so you don’t have to shop for something special just for the session.

How much do six month photos cost?

Six month milestone sessions are available as either a Simplicity Session starting at $250 or a Signature Session starting at $375. Artwork and digital images are purchased separately. You can view full details and investment information through my pricing guide when you inquire.

How long does a six month session take?

A Simplicity Session is approximately 20 minutes, while a Signature Session allows more time for variety and interaction. I keep sessions relaxed and baby-friendly, allowing time for feeding, cuddling, outfit changes, and breaks whenever your little one needs them.

What if my baby is not sitting up on their own yet?

That’s completely okay! I prefer to photograph sitter sessions when babies are sitting independently, but we can still make it work if they’re close. I can have a parent gently support baby just out of frame, and I can often edit the supporting arm out afterward.

Can we do six month photos at home?

While I can photograph babies at home, I recommend my natural-light studio for the best results. The studio gives us beautiful, consistent light, a warm and comfortable environment, timeless styling options, and plenty of space to focus completely on your baby.

How do I book my six month session?

The first step is to send me an inquiry through my website. I’ll learn a little about your baby, help determine whether a Simplicity or Signature Session is the best fit, and walk you through the process from there.
