10 Tips to Prepare For a Newborn Session

Preparing for newborn photos doesn’t have to feel overwhelming, especially during those final weeks of pregnancy when everything already feels like a lot. The good news? Flexibility is built into my newborn process, and my studio is fully stocked with everything you need to create timeless, heartfelt portraits of your baby’s earliest days.

That said, a little preparation goes a long way. Here are my top 10 tips to help you feel confident, relaxed, and ready for your newborn session!

1. Remember: Flexibility Is Built In

Your due date is approaching, and emotions are high and for good reason. Please know this: newborn sessions are designed with real life in mind. Babies arrive on their own timelines, and we plan your session with plenty of flexibility so there’s no pressure.

2. Feed Baby Fully Before Leaving Home

A full feeding right before you head to the studio helps encourage a sleepy, content baby.

3. Bring a Bottle (If You’re Able)

Whether it’s pumped milk or formula, having a bottle on hand can be incredibly helpful for soothing baby during the session – even if you’re primarily nursing.

4. Dress Baby in Easy-Off Clothing

Choose something simple and easy to remove, like a zip-up or snap-up sleeper. Avoid anything that needs to go over baby’s head – this helps keep them calm and sleepy.

5. Don’t Forget a Pacifier

Even if your baby doesn’t use one regularly, a pacifier can be a wonderful soothing tool during the session. It’s often just what we need to settle baby between setups.

6. Bring a Simple Blanket or Swaddle

Nothing fancy required here! A basic swaddle or receiving blanket is perfect for transitions and comfort.

7. Plan a Few Optional Self-Care Appointments

If you enjoy planning ahead, consider:

  • A haircut or color for you
  • Haircuts for dad and older siblings (if applicable)
  • A manicure or pedicure (neutral polish photographs beautifully)

These are optional, but they can help you feel polished and confident.

8. Keep Outfits Simple for Parents

For parents, neutral tones photograph best.

What to bring:

  • Nude undergarments
  • Strapless and regular bra (optional shapewear if you prefer)
  • Pants for dad (khaki or gray work wonderfully)

I’ll guide you through wardrobe choices ahead of time so nothing feels stressful.

9. Groom Pets

If your furry family members are joining us, a quick grooming beforehand can make a big difference in how polished the final images feel.

10. Trust That Everything Else Is Covered

My studio is stocked with wraps, outfits, props, and all the little details needed for your newborn session. You don’t need to overpack or overthink – just bring yourselves and your baby.

What is the Minneapolis newborn photography experience like with Brooke Elisabeth?

Our Minneapolis newborn photography experience is calm, baby-led, and intentionally unhurried. We guide you through preparation, provide everything needed for the session, and help you design meaningful artwork afterward so your baby’s first days are preserved with care.
