Congratulations, Mama! If you’re a first-time mom preparing for your newborn photo session, you’re probably wondering what exactly to bring along. As both a photographer and someone who has guided countless new parents through this special milestone, I know it can feel overwhelming.
This newborn session checklist is designed to help you feel calm, prepared, and excited as you walk into the studio. Let’s make your baby’s first photo experience as smooth and memorable as possible!
While the studio is fully stocked with nearly everything you could possibly need—from diapers and wipes to wraps, soothing sounds, and cozy blankets—I know that every baby is different, and sometimes it’s comforting to have your own go-to items on hand. So, just in case, here are a few helpful tips and essentials to bring along to make your session feel even more relaxed.
Newborn Session Checklist:
Fully Stocked Diaper Bag
Newborns are unpredictable, and a well-stocked diaper bag is a must.
- Diapers & wipes
- Burp cloths
- Two extra onesies (accidents happen!)
- A change of clothes for you—just in case of spit-up or leaks
- Diaper cream, if needed
Feeding Supplies
Whether you’re nursing or bottle-feeding, plan to take a feeding break or two during the session.
- Bottles (with extra formula or breastmilk)
- Nursing cover, if you prefer privacy
- Water and a light snack for yourself
Pacifier or Soothing Items
Even if your baby doesn’t regularly take a pacifier, it can help soothe them between photos. You might also bring:
- A small lovey or snuggle item
- A white noise machine (although our studio has one, too)
Favorite Swaddle or Blanket
Our studio has a beautiful selection of neutral wraps and textures, but you’re welcome to bring your own sentimental swaddle or handmade blanket for a personal touch.
Personal Touches
If there’s a special heirloom or outfit you’d like photographed—like grandma’s knitted bonnet or a custom name tag—feel free to bring it. I’ll help style it beautifully.
Time and Patience
Newborn sessions are calm, slow-paced, and baby-led. It’s normal to stop for cuddles, feeding, or soothing breaks. I build plenty of time into every session for this. So breathe deep, mama—there’s no rush. Here are a few sleep baby tips!
These tips will help baby stay nice and sleepy for the session.
- Keep baby awake for at least 1.5-2 hours before your session. A bath is a great way to wake them up, and a great task for dad!
- Feed baby a FULL feeding before our session.
- Having a bottle of pumped milk or formula can help to soothe baby through the session.
- Dress baby in just a diaper with blankets over them or clothes that are very easy to take off . A zip/snap up sleeper is great. NOTHING that goes over the head.
