The biggest difference between a mini session and a full session is the amount of time and flexibility you have. A mini is quick and focused, while a full session gives us the breathing room to let your kids warm up, pivot when needed, and capture a much wider variety of your family. For most families, especially with young kids, I’d point you toward the full session.

If you’ve been considering family photos this fall or thinking ahead to the holidays, you may be wondering: Should we book a mini session or a full photography session?
If you’ve been searching for mini session photography in Minneapolis, you’ve probably seen plenty of photographers offering short, seasonal sessions. At first glance, a mini session can seem like the obvious choice. It’s shorter, less expensive, and feels easy to fit into an already-packed family calendar.
And sometimes, a mini session really is exactly what you need.
But there are also times when families book a mini thinking, “We only need a few photos,” only to realize afterward that the limited time didn’t give them the flexibility, variety, or relaxed experience they were hoping for.
As a Minneapolis family photographer, I’ve seen both sides of this many times. The right choice really comes down to what you want from your photographs and how you want the experience itself to feel.
So if you’re trying to sort through your family photo session options, let’s break down the difference.

So, what is a mini session exactly?
A mini session is a shortened photography session designed to capture a small collection of portraits in a limited amount of time. Unlike a traditional full session, mini sessions are usually offered on predetermined dates, often with multiple families scheduled one after another.
At Brooke Elisabeth Photography, our mini sessions typically last 10–15 minutes and take place exclusively in our natural-light studio during one of our seasonal installations.
We generally offer minis around Mother’s Day in the spring and the holidays in the fall/winter, when our studio is already styled with a beautiful seasonal set.
You’ll receive two complimentary images, with the option to upgrade to the full gallery if you fall in love with more.
The experience is intentionally streamlined: one set, one outfit, a short amount of time, and back-to-back appointments.
That makes a mini session a wonderful fit if you:
But there is an important trade-off that often gets overlooked: there simply isn’t much room for the unexpected.
If your child needs five minutes to warm up to me, that can be half of your session.
If everyone is finally laughing and having fun right as your 10 minutes are ending, we can’t simply keep going.
If someone gets sick, your rescheduling options may be limited because minis happen on specific dates with appointments scheduled back-to-back.
And sometimes, the photograph you have pictured in your head, the one you want framed in your home, takes more time than you think it will.
That is the biggest difference between a mini and full session: a mini is efficient. A full session gives us room to create.
You may notice that our mini sessions are studio-only. That’s intentional.
Outdoor sessions are much more dependent on weather, light, timing, and the natural unpredictability of the environment. When we’re working with a 10–15 minute window, there simply isn’t enough flexibility to make those variables work in the way I want for my clients.
Outdoor family photography is best experienced as a full, one-on-one session where we can take our time and respond to your family as the session unfolds.

You deserve more than a hurried, back-to-back 10-minute appointment – especially when you’re documenting a season of your family’s life that you can never get back.
Our full sessions are designed around ease, flexibility, and an unhurried experience. Rather than trying to accomplish everything in a few minutes, we have time to let your family settle in.
We can capture the classic portraits you came for, but we can also slow down for the in-between moments: the giggles, the cuddles, the personalities, the games, and the little interactions that happen naturally when everyone stops worrying about getting the perfect photo.
With a Signature session, Mom also receives professional hair and makeup, access to our curated client wardrobe, and a larger final gallery filled with variety. You’ll have photographs of everyone looking at the camera, but you’ll also have images that feel like your family.
One of my favorite examples of why full sessions matter happened during a family session last fall. We had a toddler who was simply not having it.
And I mean really not having it.
We weren’t getting the full-family photograph Mom had envisioned. Mom was disappointed. Dad was trying everything he could think of. The siblings were starting to lose steam.
And, admittedly, I was sweating a little.
But because we weren’t watching the clock tick down on a 10-minute appointment, we had the ability to pivot.
Instead of continuing to push for the photograph we weren’t getting, we changed the plan. We started playing a game: who could run the fastest?
Suddenly, that toddler was smiling.
He was racing his siblings, having fun, and completely forgetting that there was a camera pointed at him.
And those ended up being some of my favorite photographs from the entire session.
That kind of pivot isn’t always possible during a mini.
The family needed time to warm up, time to try something different, and time for the right moment to happen.
Sometimes, the best photograph isn’t the first one we take.
Sometimes it’s the one we almost didn’t get because we needed another 10 minutes.
At Brooke Elisabeth, we believe our clients deserve more than a mini session.

One of the most common questions families ask when comparing photography options is: How long is a mini session?
At Brooke Elisabeth Photography, our mini sessions are approximately 10–15 minutes.
That may not sound like much, and that’s because it isn’t! The goal of a mini is to move efficiently through a small number of portraits.
For the right family, that’s perfect.
But it’s important to understand what you’re trading for that shorter appointment.
A mini session gives us less time to:
This is why I don’t recommend choosing a mini simply because you think, “We only need a few pictures.”
The number of photographs you want and the amount of time your family needs aren’t necessarily the same thing.
Children don’t always operate on a photography timeline.
Someone may need to warm up. Someone may need a snack. Siblings may need a minute to get comfortable together. A baby may need to be soothed.
A full session gives us the breathing room to let those moments happen.

The best session for your family can change as your children grow.
With older school-age children, mini sessions can be a great fit. They’re generally able to follow direction, engage quickly, and move through a short session without needing as much time to warm up.
But families with toddlers and younger children often benefit from the flexibility of a full session.
And there are certain seasons of life when I almost always recommend giving yourself more time.
Think:
These are the photographs you don’t get to redo.
Your children will never be this exact age again. That’s why I love photographing families year after year. An annual family session creates a visual timeline of your family as it grows.
If you’re photographing grandparents, cousins, siblings, or multiple generations together, I strongly recommend a full session.
Larger groups naturally require more time. We may need to photograph several combinations, give little ones breaks, and allow everyone to settle into the experience.
Trying to fit a multi-generational family into 10–15 minutes can make the experience feel rushed before we’ve even gotten started.
A full session isn’t simply a longer version of a mini.
It gives us options. Options to change direction. Options to try something again. Options to photograph different combinations of your family. Options to capture both the beautifully posed portrait and the candid moment that happens immediately afterward.
And most importantly, options to slow down.
I also think there’s a misconception that full sessions are only for big milestones.
They aren’t.
Your annual fall family photographs deserve the same thought and care as your maternity portraits. The photograph of your children at seven and nine may not feel like a major milestone today, but years from now, you’ll be so glad you documented that season.
That’s exactly why I offer Simplicity Sessions.
Our Simplicity Session is the middle ground between a mini and a full Signature experience.
It’s a weekday morning studio session designed for up to three people, with more time and breathing room than a traditional mini while still being a more approachable investment than a full session.
It’s a particularly popular option for maternity portraits and families who want a little more time without needing the full Signature experience.
So if you’re looking through your family photo session options and thinking, “A mini feels too short, but a full session isn’t quite what I’m looking for either,” a Simplicity Session may be the perfect fit.
So, which one should you choose?
If you genuinely only need a few seasonal photographs, love our studio installations, have older children who can jump right into the experience, or simply want a quick update, a mini session may be exactly right for you.
If you have younger children, want more variety, need flexibility, are documenting a milestone, want photographs for your home, or simply don’t want to feel rushed, I’d encourage you to consider a full session.
And if you’re somewhere in the middle, our Simplicity Session was created for you.
There isn’t a wrong choice.
The best photography session is the one that matches your family, your season of life, and what you actually want to walk away with.
As a photographer, I understand how easy it is to look at a busy calendar and think, “Let’s just make this as quick and easy as possible.”
But I also know how quickly these seasons pass.
The toddler who wouldn’t sit still. The missing front teeth. The way your kids still reach for your hand. The way they fit perfectly into your arms right now.
Those are the things I want you to remember.
So when you’re deciding between a mini and a full session, don’t just ask yourself, “How many photos do we need?”
Ask yourself:
“How do I want to remember this?”
Sometimes, ten minutes is exactly what you need.
And sometimes, giving your family the time to slow down is the best investment you can make.
A mini session is a short, streamlined photography experience designed to capture a small collection of portraits in a limited amount of time. At Brooke Elisabeth Photography, our mini sessions are approximately 10-15 minutes and are offered in our studio during our seasonal spring and holiday installations.
The biggest difference is the amount of time and flexibility you have. A mini session is a short, studio-only experience with one outfit and a limited timeframe. A full session gives your family significantly more time, flexibility, outfit options, access to our client wardrobe, professional hair and makeup for Mom with Signature sessions, and a much larger final gallery.
They can be, but toddlers often benefit from the additional time and flexibility of a full session. If your child takes a while to warm up or tends to need breaks, I strongly recommend a full session.
No. Our mini sessions are studio-only and are offered around our seasonal spring/Mother’s Day and holiday installations. Outdoor sessions are best suited to a full session, where we have more flexibility with weather, light, and timing. Click here to see our current indoor mini offerings!
Our Simplicity Session is designed as the middle ground. It’s a shorter studio experience with more breathing room than a mini and is especially popular for maternity portraits and smaller families.
